Michele,

Just want to throw this out there: I have never meant to teaching anything about "deciphering literature," nor the idea that we each do so in our own unique way. Literature is not a cod to be broken or deciphered. And reading is a communal act: we do not "each" read in "a unique way."

Patrice,

I asked students to write about what they learned this semester. I want you to do this even if you are choosing to write on the first option.

It's fantastic that you got so much out of the Kamau Brathwaite reading that we posted on YouTube. Mr. Brathwaite won the International Griffin Poetry Prize in 2006, and that reading was part of the festivities the week the prize was awarded. An integral part of the Griffin Poetry Prize Web presence is to invite everyone to appreciate poetry in its written and spoken forms, as you are obviously doing.

If you'd like to enjoy some more selections like the clip you found on YouTube, we have lots more on the Griffin Poetry Prize Web site. Check out:

Dr. Jay,

Could I prevail upon you to re-write this so that it IS indicative of your views? -- so that it IS of use to you? I would hope that you never write something out of fear of failing. That kind of volition is not conducive to learning. You are safe, in this course, to use your own views and to write your own mind.

Also, could you please sign your posts?

Warmly,

Though it might not be "wrong" to say, "There are so many different ways to look at something and none of them are wrong," I think more to the point is this: there are some interpretations which are just not credible, and in fact might be considered erroneous, farfetched or just plain useless. Every text has limits beyond which it cannot be stretched -- just as a hammer has things for which it might not serve a purpose.

I found it on a website and I knew that was exactly what I was trying to say. I really enjoyed this past essay that we had to ready! I really think that our entire school system here in the U.S. is screwed up and the essay kind of let me know that I wasn't the only one.

I never even thought about make-up and why girls wear it. Since I've gotten to college I rarely have the time to put it on, at least for class, and I do feel uglier. That is ludicrous! We are all beautiful. =)

I completely agree with your opinion on health insurance. It doesn't even cover some very basic situation that can be encountered on a daily basis. I think we should somehow adopt a type of universal health care system like those of europe so that everyone no matter what can get treatment for something that is wrong with them. Money shouldn't need to be an issue when it comes to your health.

I always felt the same way about science classes. What the hell am I supposed to be learning? Why do I care about chemicals? Why would I care about the chemicals in pop? It tastes good, thats all I really need to know. I think everyone in the class is considered equal, at least I hope everyone feels that way. I hope we do helluva lot more discussions about what we read, because I like hearing other people's opinions on the material other than Gabe's ha ha

Adoption doesn't mean that you are helping out a country. People adopt because they can't have children of their own, and as long as both the parent and the child are being loved, I don't think it matters what country is involved in that process.

That's a really good point and I must say I completely agree. I am pretty strong in my faith and i think it's really cool when people turn to God yet at the same time I can't stand it when people try to impose thier belief on others. If a person doesn't wanted to go to church it should be their choice. In the case of your friend I think his Mom has to realize that he's his own person and only by choosing things for himself can he find who he is.
Great quote by the way I love the Breakfast Club!

To answer your question on Q: How have people changed from being simple to being money hungry? Are colonists to blame for why money is so important to certain societies?
I think that the Indians had a true appreciation for the land and how to utilize the resources that the land provided to them. The colonists seemed to have greed engraved in their genetic make-up. They were wasteful and had no regard for what the were destroying. Are they to blame for why money is so important? I think they paved the way for making people believe that money = power. The more land, money, and material items they gained, the more they felt superior to everyone else and I think that was the breeding ground for greed in the future. Just a thought! Feel free to disagree!

I always loved having a day off of school, but I disagree with applauding anyone who took part in torturing the innocent. I feel that noone even knows why we celebrate Colombus in the first place. - Lauren Teeter
